- Relocate all family members and pets to a hygienic and secure location.
- If possible, turn off your water supply.
- Shut off the breaker in the affected area before handling any electrical devices that are being exposed to the water remaining in your building.
- Do not turn on the electricity until it has been examined by a specialist.
- Do your best to air out the building! If it is summer, and the weather is nice, open all of the windows and doors in your residence and develop optimal air flow in the building.
- During the winter, alternate the windows and doors that are open, so as to allow the natural air to work in tandem with the heat from your building. Be sure to use good judgment if the electricity is still out!
- Remove any sentimental/personal articles subject to damage immediately to help minimize loss.
- Identify and remove any items that may transfer color and stain your carpets such as: clothing, shoes, books, plants.
- If you have furniture on top of a wet carpet, place aluminum foil under the parts of the furniture that are in contact with the carpet itself. This will prevent stains to your carpet and help to avoid any damage that the furniture has absorbed from the water.
- Tie up your draperies so that they are no longer in contact with the wet carpet.
- Pin up any excess material surrounding your furniture to avoid contact with the wet carpet.
- When possible, wipe off any water on your wooden furniture.
- Do not attempt to wash surfaces with residential cleaning products.
- Do not ingest any food that has been exposed to the water damage.
